everything changed when i realized the majority of white writers criticizing rap music focused on words instead of sounds because a. they are much easier to write about and b. it's a socially accepted vehicle for paternalist crypto-racism

I love and hate this question because the two are so thoroughly co-dependent.. 'bad'/simple lyrics can function perfectly over simple music, but, like, Fiona Apple and David Longstreth aren't singing Bad to the Bone over those chord changes

great essay, love the idea of yacht rock as an ethos that transcends musical genre. but it's also a post-hoc neologism for a fairly specific sound. love this: '[Sailing is] a far cry from “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” and way closer to Avalon by Roxy Music or Pure Moods.'
