What's that sound? 🔊

Rice's whales have unique vocalizations that are clearly distinguishable from the calls of other whales. Think you could recognize this 'long-moan' call?

Sad to report that yet another newly born right whale has been greviously injured, most likely by a boat's propellers off South Carolina. It was the first of nine calves born this year. The critically endangered species can't bear to lose any calves.

Literally peeing in my pants reading Joe Roman’s book “Eat, poop and die”. He came home last year and came with me collect samples and quoted me without any edit nor filter what I told him. Wolfgang is cited too. Pretty epic, thank you, Joe

Blue whales have been confirmed to frequent the waters around Seychelles. This discovery is significant because Seychelles was a major hunting ground for Soviet whalers in the 20th century.

My latest attempt at plotting global blue whale catches, and dividing them into subspecies groupings (colors), and populations (acronyms).

X = areas blue whales avoid.
Circle size is proportional to log(catch) in 1×1° regions.

Hi there, humans!

I’m the world’s smallest cetacean, a critically endangered vaquita. Sadly, only 10 of us remain, & we need your help to survive.

Illegal fishing & gillnets have pushed us to the edge. Help us secure a future for our species! Signed, 🐬
