These days you want the race framed - meaning the stakes are raised, opponent is defined, choice is defined - by June. (Think Obama-Romney in 2012).

To the contrary, I think Biden wants a direct confrontation with Trump EARLY to shape the race on Biden’s terms. Plus - people start voting on September! Debates in October are too late.

I think this is a joke….but regardless let me say that I dealt with the well-meaning Commission on Presidential Debates in 2016 and it was not up to the challenge of dealing with the unconventional Trump.
