To accelerate India's development, we need to build a more effective Indian state.
In this episode with Amit Varma, we do a deep dive into the Indian bureaucracy, and discuss practical implementable ideas for making it more effective.
Weekend listening recommendation!
A fantastic choice. This is one of the most important papers in development economics of the past two decades (and also important for ALL economists and policy makers to read).
Many congratulations to Dennis Egger Johannes Haushofer Edward Miguel Paul Niehaus and Michael Walker!
Rarely do I find a book so engaging that I defer some of my paper revisions to read it. Having still only read about 35% of this classic on state capacity and governance by Karthik Muralidharan, I was trying to make a bucket list of who all this is a must read for. The list is too long!
Great endorsement! I am witness to the journey of this phenomenal book from draft to publication. Karthik Muralidharan has precisely articulated the intuition of everyone working in & with the Govt. Research based evidence & implementable ideas make it a practitioner’s delight.
Wonderful to see this endorsement of my new book by Amitabh Kant who calls it a 'must read for every civil servant of India'!
It is also likely to be of great relevance for UPSC aspirants (especially for the mains)

Glad to be reading the much awaited book by Karthik Muralidharan - 'Accelerating India's Development'. It is not only a deep dive into India's lack of state capacity and governance (Science), but also a prescriptive book on how to enhance the government capacity to deliver.
Now officially forthcoming at The JHR jhr.uwpress.org/content/early/… 🎉🎉🎉
