Was so excited to receive my first letter from my STEM pen pal this week! Hope she enjoys reading my 4-page response detailing my journey as a scientist. Can’t wait for the next letter! Letters to a Pre-Scientist

Thank you Boston University & AAAS Gov't Relations for the opportunity to attend the 2023 AAAS CASE Workshop this week! This was such an invaluable experience to learn about the federal policy-making process and how my voice can be used to for science! Feeling inspired & energized 💪👩‍🔬

Get to know your BUtiful Brain! Had a blast spreading the joy and wonder of the brain at the Museum of Science this weekend. Our grad student volunteers were amazing. We had 18 volunteers over 2 days & interacted with hundreds of museum visitors. A memorable weekend for everyone!

ASTROCYTES ARE NOT ONLY IMPORTANT, THEY ARE VITAL. WITHOUT ASTROCYTES, NEURONS CANNOT MATURE THEIR CONNECTIONS PROPERLY AND LOSE THEIR ABILITY TO ADEQUATELY CHANGE IN RESPONSE TO EXPERIENCE. THEY ARE CALLED A-S-T-R-O-CYTES BECAUSE THEY ARE, IN FACT, THE STARS OF THE BRAIN

People have long thought that astrocytes release something that kills neurons, which could partly explain why neurons die in injury/neurodegenerative disease. In a paper that just came out, we think we found one of these long-sought toxic factors! (1/8) go.nature.com/3afi6si

Full disclosure for the grad students struggling out there.
I was in lab for 15h yesterday. And my experiments didn't work. I've done this assay over 1000 times. And it didn't work. It happens sometimes.
Looking at my lab notes today to work out what went wrong.

Hang in there.
