Reading Wendy Cheng’s new book Island X helped me realize how important campus anti-Vietnam War protests were to later democracy movements in Taiwan as diasporic students were galvanized by activism in the US, and that we are in another historical moment in the present.

NCCU’s Lev Nachman summed up Sunflower’s legacy for #Taiwan domestically: “The protests defined a generation’s political awakening and is where a whole cohort of now-established politicians got their start.”

It's kind of remarkable how little attention the international media is paying to Fu Kun-chi's delegation of legislators in China so far. 16 are elected. 4 are indigenous. Fu is echoing Ma's reformulation of the 1992 consensus in ethno-nationalist terms. This is a big deal.
