Often, we frame our change activities in a challenging way: 'break the rules', 'confront the status quo', 'daring to fail & learn' etc. Why don't we flip this & just give ourselves permission to do things? I'm inspired by these 'permission slips' from Kyle Wiens. What do you give

As a reminder, if team members are afraid to speak up because they might be punished if wrong, then you are going to lose the benefits of teams (lots of minds & perspectives on a single task), but have all of the downsides. Psychological safety is vital! oneusefulthing.substack.com/p/the-problem-…

Personal News: On Friday, I, along with most of my design team, was laid off. If you’re looking for:

- a Principal designer/manager
- Senior Designer
- Early career Designer

reach out. They are all US based, good people, and good designers. B2C oriented. We were remote.

Each of us can help create a culture of psychological safety: 1) Admit our own mistakes 2) Run lots of experiments to try out improvements 3) Make space to speak, be curious & say 'I don't know' 4) Be patient - psychological safety takes time/effort/persistence. By Tom Geraghty

'Radical collaboration' is about working together in deeper, more relational ways than transactional approaches. It's about shared decisions & working through conflict with humility & vulnerability. When I became a manager, the Skill-Will Matrix was the most important framework I learned.

Your management style should depend on the employee’s context. Some people lack motivation (will), others expertise (skill) and some both.

You can’t just manage people how you like to be.

Bill Nye said “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.”

And this new paper shows Nye is right. People learn far more from a conversation with a stranger than they expect, and not just about the person; they learn useful information as well. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
