Inline with Beijing's approach to define the sixteen recognised First Nations in Taiwan not as indigenous peoples but as a single 'ethnic minority' among the 56 of the PRC, but an affront to the global movements for First Nations identities, rights and representation.

As I said, developing a full understanding the implications for Australia of a China-Taiwan war in the nation's public discourse is an important, even urgent, policy task.

Absolutely superb talk from David Rennie 任大伟 on China.

I cannot but note that his arguments align with those of Catie Lilly and me in our forthcoming book about Taiwan, that Taiwan today manifests the contradictions of the post-WWII global architecture.

'I see a problem with the idea that 'Australia will always be Australia, and China will always be China'”.

Extraordinary piece by Vicky Xu / 許秀中 in response to Wang Yi's visit to Australia.

'Australia's AUKUS submarines could be used to fight China in war over Taiwan, US official says'

I think he said Australia's AUKUS submarines could help deter China from going to war with the Taiwanese?

'China can be a democracy too, says Scott Morrison'

Past time for politicians and policy-makers to drop this kind of culturalism, a tell for not understanding culture, democracy, liberalism in modern China, and Taiwan's distinctive history and identity.

Solid report about Taiwan from ABC News, from Libby Hogan.

Avoiding any reference to 1949, again highlighting how Australian journalism has come to produce more substantive and correct generalist accounts of Taiwan than the academic sector.

Excited to see word of this forthcoming book by Catie Lilly & Mark Harrison that James Lin jamestwotree.bsky.social is enthusiastic about, have heard about it being in the works for some time, not sure when it is out or if anything is online yet; this screenshot is from a Cambria Press email blast...

I was fortunate to read an advance copy of Catie Lilly and @mhar4's new book, Revolutionary Taiwan. It exceeded all expectations. Chou and Harrison have presented a Taiwan-centric historical narrative that explains its search for identity, sovereignty, and nationhood.
