The government is paying billions incentivising fossil fuel use & undermining its *own* green industry policy. It's like me announcing a healthy eating policy in my house, then offering my kids $10 to eat lollies and $2 to eat broccoli.

Money for gas in this budget
- geoscience half billion for exploration, open to gas
- CCS money, for benefit of gas industry
- $1.5bn Middle Arm fracked gas funding still there

A tax incentive for green hydrogen is good, but Matt Ryan ran the numbers and found that we have a a lot more to do to make a difference given Australia's greenhouse gas emissions

We need more investment, more urgency & more ambition

Speaking of not spending money on things that might actually make us safer: Australian aid spending is stagnant. We’re not even meeting half of our bipartisan commitment, let alone our UN commitment, and it’s worse today than it was during the Abbott era.

I would have thought that funding environmental legal services would do more to 'protect Australia’s natural environment, ecosystems and biodiversity' than litter prevention. But maybe that's just me.

Maybe all the folks who aren't worried about making rent or putting food on the table can donate their energy bill relief to a frontline women's safety service. I'll go first.

Where are those Labor MPs who cried foul about Labor's coal & gas expansion plans?

Despite the crocodile tears, the MPs for Macnamara, Wills, Cooper, Richmond & Moreton all just backed new coal and gas and failed to vote against Labor's Future Gas Strategy.

It's grandstanding.

The Australian Government is so confident that fossil fuel use is going to increase in Australia that they are actively budgeting for it.
Renewable energy...not so much.

And across the Forwards, the total subsidy is about the same as forgiving all HECS debt. Which is better value?

Liz Morison Love your work, Liz. We could cover dental under Medicare for half this amount, but instead the governments want to subsidise fossil fuels.

Aus govts spent $14.5B last yr ($65B over 5yrs) on fossil fuel subsidies🤯

Some things that get less:
- Housing (HAFF gets $10B over 5yrs)
- Uni loan support (HECS support gets $3B)
- Women's safety (<$1B)
- Climate relief ($200m Disaster Ready Fund)

Proud to have contributed to this new research.

Fossil fuel subsidies up $14b in 2023-24. Over the forwards this expenditure is 16x disaster ready funding.

Hard to take the ALP seriously till these are gone. Australia Institute

Total fossil fuel subsidies over the forward estimates from all governments has reached a record high of $65 billion.

That's 16 times the balance of Australia’s Disaster Ready Fund (as of December 2023). 🤷

Fossil fuel subsidies cost Australian governments $14.5 billion in 2023-24.

This has *increased* by 31%, from $11.1 billion in 2022-23.

Eliminating these subsidies would significantly increase government revenue to address climate issues, while also reducing emissions.

The Australian Govt is contributing $38 million to the Tuvalu climate change adaptation project. This is 2.5% of what it is giving to a single gas export hub in the NT (so gas companies can keep contributing to the climate change that Tuvalu has to adapt to)

We have more than enough gas for the transition.

But the major parties have failed to prioritise energy security for 🇦🇺households & businesses.

They've also failed to a fair deal on the sale of our gas.

The govt cannot cry poor in the budget while this remains the case.
