Thank you, Chilliwack Teachers’ Association, for inviting us to talk with early career teachers about their Hopes and Dreams for public education in BC. We really appreciated being there. (Loved the smoothie bowl treats, too!)

Our Vancouver School Board handles a big budget of ~$600 million for the year 2024/25.

This money should be used to confront the most pressing challenges at our schools, but sadly, that’s not happening under ABC leadership.

The same is true in BC. Years of underfunding public ed and not having a proactive capital planning/building process has created a crisis. Yes, it's time to put a priority on building public schools and recruiting the staffing we urgently need.

What's upsetting about the whole VSB budget process is that with a $600 Million dollar budget, the majority of the Vancouver School Board trustees were only willing to debate over the 600K (0.1%) that the District allotted them to discuss. Thanks for your efforts JenniferReddy and Suzie Mah.

This increase basically covers the increase in wages and enrolment but doesn’t make a dent in the crisis parents have raised the alarm about. Resource teachers will continue to be called away to sub and there won’t be enough support workers, especially at the HS level.
