This is from a book about what killed giants. Okay good to raise doubt on the old “caught a cold” story for Tippecanoe but I hope he’s raised the issue of esophagitis and George Washington. Eager to read that. nytimes.com/2014/04/01/sci…

'Scientists can map viruses down to the atomic level but have a hard time guessing what people will do.' Oh so true, The New York Times German Lopez The allure of reductionism. I feel it too.

A little belated, but I interviewed some leading neuroscientists about what makes the smiles in SMILE so damn creepy! Thanks to Peggy Mason and Lisa Feldman Barrett for taking the time!

I don’t get how a surgeon can override a women’s choice. Especially when the surgeon is putting the woman at great risk with multiple surgeries needed for reconstruction. washingtonpost.com/health/2022/06…

It’s arguable but I don’t believe we should be approving drugs whose major contribution is hope. Cheaper ways to accomplish that. This is the ugly downside of patient advocacy. We’re all better off if we look at medical evidence soberly. washingtonpost.com/health/2022/09…

The ⁦NFL⁩ ‘s “concussion protocol” is so much b.s. ⁦shannon sharpe⁩ has it all right. Players love to play. They need to be saved from themselves after a traumatic brain injury - which is what a “concussion” is. Stop the euphemisms. washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/09…

Feel good story. Not so much science but for all of you who are flute-lovers as I am. nytimes.com/2022/09/28/art…

I had such a great time at Arit (Austrian Research and Innovation Talk). Here is the full recording but it goes immediately to the (middle of the) Science Communications Panel when you click on it.

Rather than sit quietly for 15 minutes in a room, half the subjects in this study hit a button to give themselves an electric shock. One man hit it 190 times. Lesson: we don’t like the feeling of boredom. washingtonpost.com/wellness/2022/…

Peggy Mason Yes I truly loved it & I couldn't but tell everybody about every single topic you tackled. I also loved your book. I received my copy last week from Amazon & though I'm not in the medical field, I'm enjoying reading it. Thank you for telling us how fascinating the brain is...😊
