the people who run a system built around profit are never going to freely agree - beyond lip service - that making art or entertainment inherently matters and is valuable. that’s what strikes are for 🙂

the past decade has been a very depressing live demonstration of how capitalism will, left to its own devices, treat writing and creative work and the people who do it: as an inconveniently complex link in the supply chain rather than something meaningful in its own right

This is why we’re striking. The studios are trying to turn writing into a gig job. Eliminating the writers room, forcing screenwriters to work for free, paying late night writers a “day rate.” If we don’t fight back, writing will cease to exist as a livable career.

Writers are asking for a 2% raise. The studios say they can’t do that. Meanwhile:

I'm incredibly proud of how transparent our union is. In the Writers Guild of America West's strike announcement, we included a list of our proposals, and the AMPTP's responses. Read it for yourself: it explains in black and white we're forced to go on strike.

These lopsided decisions about compensation — lavish windfalls at the top and paltry raises for the rest of us — are unfair and immoral. For a company that likes to champion its ethical principles, their proposals are deeply hypocritical. We know they can do better.

Speaking from experience with Wirecutter Union, strikes suck. They’re hard, they’re stressful. They’re the last resort. I know NYTimesGuild is only taking this action because they have to. I hope The New York Times sees how serious they are and comes back with fair contract terms, soon.
