David Cooke Phoebe Williams Yes, but it was the symbol of a native King. King Cadwaladr of Gwynedd first used it and others have then used it since. It is also a feature of a story in the Mabinogion.

English monarchs later took it & claimed decent from Cadwaladr trying to lay claim to all Britain.
