Former Plough pub, Wallington, Herts. Frequented by George Orwell who lived next door 1936-1940, in the village that apparently provided the setting for Animal Farm (additional images from display board in St Mary’s church)

During the time my ancestors lived here, the publicans at the Barley Mow from at least 1861-1881 were Samuel Dean and wife Alice who were also farmers of 25 acres. They were born and died in the village, and their gravestone can be found in the village churchyard

Chip van outside the brewery tap. Portion of chips please. “Have you pre-ordered on the app?” No. “Well, it’ll be over an hour before we can even think about it”. Right. What ever happened to spontaneity? Chips ffs!
