Know how I'm out here constantly saying Canadian public institutions and government purposely ignore freedom of information laws — even when they're told to follow them: theglobeandmail.com/canada/article…

“It is not the job of Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario to protect the government from embarrassing itself. Its role is to interpret privacy laws in a manner that benefits the public, not corporations and government agencies.”

Here's a head-scratcher:
1. Journalists FOI info on health care worker shortage, get denied.
2. They appeal.
3. Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario agrees there's a “compelling public interest,” but says that's not enough.

If the public interest isn't enough, what is?

More examples of why Canada is an access disgrace. Only in this country are nurse, personal support workers and doctor shortages confidential information. Also disgusting: this was backed by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario !! Make it make sense. theglobeandmail.com/canada/article…

For 18 years, the federal government had a centralized, internal FOI database of request summaries. It was quietly killed in 2008, and its contents deleted because the data was considered 'transitory.'

Absolutely bonkers story here: A court has ruled a tenant can be held liable for taxes that a non-resident landlord fails to pay. So tenants are expected to keep tabs on where their landlords live and pay taxes... theglobeandmail.com/real-estate/va…

Like many, I've been a fan of Robyn Doolittle for ages. So, it's a serious understatement to say that I was absolutely stoked to get the chance to share the details about my law firm, Luceo Legal, with her for the Legal Moves piece.

So happy for Anil, but this is sad. He led on the principle that government institutions are custodians for public information and that people are entitled to that information. He really pushed StatsCan to be transparent and accountable to the public. theglobeandmail.com/business/artic…
