My latest for HistoryExtra on 8 shocking scandals that shaped Victorian Britain. All were followed by social reform, but the change that resulted was not always that which was intended or needed.

In the male workroom at Beaumaris Prison, prisoners picked oakum. A form of hard labour, the task could make fingers bleed. Even so, some still found opportunity, time & strength to carve names & pictures into the floor tiles. An act of amusement, resistance or self expression?

The laundry at Beaumaris Prison, North Wales. A necessary task, but due to gender norms & expectations, the washing was almost always done by female (rather than male) prisoners. From 1865, it was officially recognised as hard labour (but of the second class).

The female workroom in the 19thC prison at Beaumaris, North Wales. Apparently, there was a nursery above. If her baby cried, the prisoner could pull on the cord to rock the cradle, without interrupting her work. I feel this is both ingenious and a little sad.

Saw this at Westminster Abbey and was reliably informed that no one has ever contested the claim - to be Britain's oldest door (c1050). Sounds like a good challenge to me!
