A big concern is seepage of false rhetoric into policy discussions (the 'towel throwing' we described in the article). If you don't stop a barrage of deniallist rhetoric, it eventually seeps into the way experts discuss and frame the truth. See here: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Crime of the axe-the-tax campaign? It is distracting Canada from a real discussion about the climate policy options. Misinformation is leading people to argue for abandoning a policy, without considering the costs of doing so. From Kathryn Harrison and I:

When looking at temperature anomalies (departures from normal), always think about baseline or reference period. Many of the figures being shared today use a recent baseline, e.g. 1991-2020. The anomalies here would be ~0.8-1 deg C higher using a 1851-1900 baseline.

Are you a recent PhD in marine and/or climate science interested in marine heatwaves and other climate extremes still on the site? Want to work in a diverse group, and help make sense of what the heck is happening in the ocean? We have a postdoc opening: simondonner.com/post-doctoral-…

That was the warmest March on record and 10th consecutive record breaking month.
For everyone freaking out, El Niños typically keep global avg temps high for a few months into the year after the events start. A pending La Niña will likely stop the streak of records... for now.

In the lead up to a big annual report coming later this spring, Canada's Net-Zero Advisory Body (NZAB) has released a 'What We Heard' Report, summarizing lessons from groups across the country over the past year. Check it out: nzab2050.ca/publications/w…

Given how much people are absorbed in screens and virtual interactions, it is heartening to see so many people excited about a real celestial phenomenon, and be so interested in the sky above.

Calls to suspend the April 1 increase at best ignore the real causes of the affordability crisis, and at worst seek to win Canadians’ support via false solutions, write Simon Donner and Kathryn Harrison University of British Columbia ow.ly/Fm4o50R9noh

What's so ridiculous about axe-the-tax campaign is that there are real debates to be had about how to implement carbon pricing + complementary policies needed to make it work well. Instead, experts must waste their time debunking falsehoods and restating clearly verifiable facts.

The list of economists who say the arguments vs carbon pricing - not exactly the current carbon tax, but close - are bunk keeps growing, and Pierre Poilievre and many premiers keep pretending expertise doesn’t matter. Hard times breeds opportunism. thestar.com/opinion/star-c…

Recommend watching this, regardless of how you feel about the PM or the carbon pricing system. You may still disagree afterwards, it's worth a few minutes to at least hear the argument out.
