Rob Chapman Like anything else, there are good books on music and not so good ones. The quality - Graeme Thomson and Ian Winwood produce good work, David Hepworth's stuff, Craig Brown's book on The Beatles, sylvie simmons excellent Leonard Cohen biog, etc etc

How lovely it was to see Paul Buchanan singing on stage again in Glasgow last night. It felt like the whole city rose to meet him when he walked on (they didn't let him leave without putting up a fight, either...)

As a little girl in London, the Shangri-Las were up there with the Beatles and the Ronettes for me. Mary Weiss' voice on those amazing rebel teenage-drama classics has a permanent place in my memory. So sad she's gone.

Original Long Ryders bassist Barry Shank wrote this classic. When the band was accused of sounding like the Byrds they got the idea of recording a Byrds-like song with a Byrd on it. Gene sings on this song…rest in peace, Gene, you were an inspiration.
