Mbaraki #pillartomb in Mombasa, Kenya. At 14m high the tower would have been useful for navigating around the harbour though there has been a lot of development hiding it since being built around 15th century. #AprilTowers
#AprilTowers a snap of the northern side of the complex at the Rock of Cashel, in which you can see another Round Tower example.
April blossom at St Sampson’s, Cricklade, Wiltshire. Look at those lovely octagonal turrets. #AprilTowers
#AprilTowers snaps of the Round Tower at Ardmore, Waterford. A stunning structure with very beautiful views. The tower is almost 30m tall.
My last #AprilTowers is Bodiam Castle (E. Sussex) A picturesque site regularly featuring on many book covers. It's also significant in castle studies as in the 1990s it was at the centre of a debate looking whether a castle was primarily a military structure or a symbol of power.
Church of St Petroc, Trevalga near Boscastle, Cornwall.
Wonderful little settlement with the church at its heart. And to the north is the sea.

#AprilTowers Pics of the #towerhouse at Aghalahard, #Mayo . A form of castellated structure that became common in Ireland; and in use from the 14th to mid 17th cents. 2nd pic provides an interesting cross section of a towerhouse. A machicolation in the 1st, a defensive element.
It’s all going on on the tower of Holy Cross, Sherston, Wiltshire. Designed by Thomas Sumsion in 1730, we have trefoiled blank panels, gothic crockets, a classical niche, medieval face to the 1st stage. M-shaped tracery to the bell-openings.🤩 #SteepleSaturday #AprilTowers
Venta Silurum/Caerwent Roman town wall & its towers, Jan 2020. Possibly the best surviving Roman civil defences in Britain? 🤔 #AprilTowers
The Cow Tower, Norwich, 1398/99, the earliest extant free-standing artillery platform in England. Only the Westgate, Canterbury has older gunports. Faced inside and out with rather fabulous brick, around a flint-rubble core. #AprilTowers
The early C14th Pele Tower at Corbridge in Northumberland. Built of stone from the Roman fort of Coria (Corbridge), it served as a fortified residence for the vicars of the nearby parish church of St. Andrews. #AprilTowers
The late 14thC donjon of Warkworth Castle (Northumberland), described as 'a masterpiece of medieval English architecture', was built on an earlier motte. It replaced a late 12C/early 13C masonry tower, which had replaced a timber one. #mottemonday #AprilTowers
