3 That could happen in 2023, when we published a new book. Thanks to V. Wahl we could compare birds & habitats in Prague in 1930/1940s and 2010/2020s. We also provide access to forgotten findings by V. Wahl and his tragic life story.

1 Here I present a story of birds in Prague & a brave man: in 1944, a book Birds of Prague described a state of birds in the city. Main habitats were described, comments on urbanisation of birds and recommendations to nature conservation were provided too.

2 The author, Veleslav Wahl (22), was excellent ornithologist, active in anti-nazi resistance, later also in the anti-communist resistance. He was executed by the communist regime in 1950. In his last will he wished the book is updated and published again.

4 Number of species recorded in the city increased from 182 to 248. The increase in waterbirds is the most obvious, most likely due to absence of ice cover in recent winters, more water bodies & perhaps their better management.

5 Species colonising the city since 1930/1940s include those increasing at national scale or some waterbirds. Species with large body size are often among those appearing in the city as newcomers. (Ilustrations by Jan Hošek).

We often discuss the impact of anthropogenic food on birds, but what is the impact of bird feeding on people? Notions like the extinction of experience and pigeon paradox suggest we need to reconnect to nature, especially children growing up in cities

Finally, species colliding sort by rank. Subtropical Asian islands showed distinctively different patterns. (1) Non-passerine as super-colliders, e.g. barbets and goshawks. (2) Cryptic species collide along the flyway, e.g. Rubby kingfisher. 🪟🦅⁉️
