We regularly work with professional artists to develop our techniques including our control and use of materials. This half term we’ve learnt about Burmantofts Pottery and worked with artist Kevin Hickson to improve our clay skills. Here are our Y5 ‘Cosmic’ inspired wall hangings

One joy of having a meeting in an old railway hotel is, as at Principal York, there’s an entrance straight off the train. Here the octagonal hall is tiled to match; and I got here early just to gawp again at the jaw-dropping Burmantofts faience-lined old refreshment room of 1896.

Cromwell Heights 🏘️ 3 T-shaped blocks on Cromwell Street in Burmantofts. They were built c.1960 and replaced terraced housing as part of Leeds’ slum clearance scheme.

Leeds benefited from migrants such as Montague Burton, a Lithuanian Jew who came to escape pogroms. After starting his tailoring chain in Sheffield, he moved operations to Leeds. By mid-20th century his Burmantofts works was thought to be the world’s largest clothing factory. 1/6

Naseby Grange 🏙️ A 17 storey block in Burmantofts, adjacent to Cromwell Heights. It was built in 1965 and replaced terraced housing as part of Leeds’ slum clearance scheme.
