Launceston Castle was built on an existing rock outcrop in the late 11th century. For 600 years, it was the most important fortress and centre of government in Cornwall.
During the 1920s I was always told that my maternal great grandparents would join in the annual procession in Launceston of the relics of St. Cuthbert Mayne, one of the English Martyrs. From what I can gather it was a big event and concluded with Solemn High Mass at the church.
