Poseidon found in Kolhapur, Maharashtra (1st c. CE) and Sri discovered in Pompeii near Rome (79 CE). Interesting how history contrasts with common beliefs about Biryani introduced by the Mughals.

The one thing that always survives is art.
Whether its cave drawings or the frescoes of Pompeii the art always remains.

House of Neptune (1st Century AD) in Herculaneum :

The association between Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvius goes way back to 79 AD, where the fateful eruption of volcano smothered this town under pyroclastic material. However, Herculaneum unlike Pompeii, was not hit by rain of ash

This remarkable floor mosaic of an octopus fighting a lobster, surrounded by a spectacular variety of sea creatures, was found during the excavation of the House of the Dancing Faun, ancient Pompeii’s richest residence (1st century, National Archaeological Museum, Naples)

Another fantastic programme TheNewDig . So beautiful the way it really brings home the human tragedy of it, alternating between the expressive faces of the excavators and intimate close-ups of wall paintings, rooms & bodies. Very sensitively done

Found an old photo of mine. From my very first visit to in the late 1990s as an student. What a field trip that was 😍

The Nuceria Gate from the outside with part of the ramparts that defended the town visible.
