Last week we crashed Serco Group's AGM.

We shared a powerful statement from members of our End Detention group about their experiences of detention, and asked Serco if they are going to continue to profit from pain.

The response was extremely disappointing.

Serco Group Despite making complaints to staff about the abuse she was experiencing, including a threat to physically harm her from one staff member, no action was taken.

When Anika became suicidal, action was finally taken, and she was put into segregation.

Serco Group Anika was finally released from detention, but the experience has had a lasting impact:

'I am a different person now. My physical and mental health have been destroyed. I lost my period. I became stressed, I am traumatised. I am still suffering; I am still in pain.'

Serco Group Anika was held at Serco-run Yarl's Wood for over a month which she described as 'torture'.

She experienced racism, harassment and physical threats whilst she was detained, including from staff working in the detention centre.

'I was scared to death the whole time.'

We’ll continue to support women with NOI and who are locked up in detention.

The cruel Rwanda plan must be scrapped, to prevent people seeking safety from risk of further harm, exploitation or abuse.

Women seeking safety in the UK should be supported to heal and thrive.

We’ve spoken to women facing forced deportation to Rwanda and they are extremely terrified.

Some were detained as they went to report to the Home Office as usual - all they have are the clothes they were detained in.

We need a compassionate, fair and effective asylum system that:

✅makes timely decisions
✅recognises women’s specific experiences of gender-based persecution
✅provides safe routes for all those who need them

The Home Office’s own research into Rwanda’s human rights records cites that refugee women and girls are at a disproportionate risk of gender-based violence and trafficking.

Yet, they’re targeting women with forced deportation to Rwanda - to risks of further harm.

Threatening to forcibly deport people seeking safety thousands of miles away is ✈️

People seeking safety should:
✔️have their claims heard in the UK
✔️be supported to heal and thrive as they rebuild their lives here.

Our research shows that detention is extremely harmful and has long-lasting negative effects.

And the history of harm, violence and abuse at Yarl’s Wood are well-evidenced, which raises extreme concerns for the safety and wellbeing of the women who have been detained there.
