I don't know how I came up with Titanic Voyage's rules of time travel. I think multiverses are less exciting, so I don't do that, and I loved the idea of using a ride to interact with the past. I knew Liam was special, but that 'why' came to me on its own.

I came up with my rules of time travel during a 10+ hour drive while I was first outlining my entire series in my head. I decided that time can heal itself from small issues, so if my MC happens to accidentally steps on a frog, it won't mess up the future.
There are 3 time machines in FUTURE'S PAST. One is from TIMES WITHOUT NUMBER by John Brunner and follows his rules. One is the imperial Chinese machine which disappeared when that timeline did, and the third is the PRC machine. We don't know how that works.

Pain?
Physical - My MC gets stabbed in the shoulder & hit with a war hammer in the head.
Emotional - He sees his dad get stabbed in the chest, he kills a man, and he sees friends die.
So yeah, there's pain in my book.
