This painting of the beaches shortly after the #NormandyLandings was the first in a series that Anthony Gross would complete on his way to the heart of a shattered Germany.

At 12.15 #OTD in 1944, 2nd Bn, South Wales Borderers launched an attack on the strongly held Chรขteau de Sully, near Bayeux.

Gross was appointed as an official #WarArtist early in the Second World War, and in December 1941, he was attached to the 9th Army, then in Palestine and French Syria.
He would capture scenes here before moving to North Africa and then on to Burma.
