The following day, 7th June 1944, he sat down with the sketchbook and watercolours he'd held higj above his head to keep dry while landing and captured the scene on the Jig Sector of Gold Beach.

Gross was appointed as an official early in the Second World War, and in December 1941, he was attached to the 9th Army, then in Palestine and French Syria.

He would capture scenes here before moving to North Africa and then on to Burma.
