World Bee Day was proposed by Slovenia and adopted by the United Nations in 2017.
The date was chosen to mark the birth in 1734 of the regions famed beekeeper Anton Janša. Anton was the first teacher of beekeeping, by royal appointment in Vienna, to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Yellow-legged Asian hornet nest identification can be highly valuable. At this time of year embryo or primary nests are worth looking out for, especially in sheltered locations such as sheds. From July larger secondary nests are the focus.

Today, on World Bee Day, online supermarket Ocado has launched a nationwide competition, to celebrate back garden beekeepers and find the finest small-scale produced honey in the UK, with help from Nigella Lawson and the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA).
