#OnThisDay 1921 Three soldiers from the King's Own Scottish Borderers were shot dead by the IRA near Castletownbere. They had been lured out for a walk by young women who disappeared just before the IRA showed up. The British Army burned 5 homes in reprisal.

The State just spent €48 million of our money to upgrade the fishing pier at Castletownbere in West Cork to accommodate supertrawlers up to 100m in length. There is no Irish boat of this length. That money could have gone a long way to making fishing more sustainable, not less.
