The House of the Orchard at Pompeii for #FrescoFriday - with thanks to Dr Sophie Hay for tipping me off when it was open and her time yesterday. Great to meet!

Tomb of the Diver at Paestum
It was found by Mario Napoli in June of 1968, near the city of Paestum located in Magna Graecia. Its significance is that it contains the only example of Greek wall painting from the Classical period to survive in entirety.

The Cavalcaselle Museum of Verona exhibits frescoes that have been removed from the facades of the city's buildings and churches. It's housed inside the ancient deconsecrated monastery of San Francesco al Corso. According to the tales of Romeo and Juliet, 👇
The House of Venus in the Shell at Pompeii features a stunning fresco of a reclining Venus afloat on a vibrant blue sea. In the garden lush hedges are surrounded by a peristyle. #FrescoFriday

Stunning detail from the fresco from Livia’s villa. The fresco wraps the room making you feel as though you’ve been transported to a faraway place and you have. The artistry of thousands of years calmly envelopes you from birds and fruits to flowers and trees.

Get to your weekend like the maenad you are, beautiful people! Low slung coverings, trays of delights, and the ability to float through the air are non-negotiable.

If you are visiting the Colosseum and Circus Maximus, you are advised to make a short detour across the street to admire them.

The Romans were fascinated by Egypt, not just strategically or politically - such as a ‘bread basket’ or the Cleopatras - but also as a culture of deeply ancient gods and beliefs. This depiction of Anubis dates to the Hadrianic era.

As the end of the week approaches may Dionysus (Mr Bacchus himself) smile upon you in the most delightful ways possible. Here the god enjoys some shirtless time and a good relax.

How to keep annoying insects away from fruits 😉. A fresco from the Villa di Poppaea at Oplontis depicts how it is done: The basket with fruits is covered with a transparent veil.
What never ceases to amaze me is the painters' attention of detail!

#FrescoFriday Having (oddly) made back-to-back visits to Pompeii and the reconstructed 'Villa Ventorum' (The Newt in Somerset), it was fun to spot the villa's Aeneas and Venus had travelled from Italy too - maybe via Low Ham...

Roman fresco of a little bird pecking at fruit. Buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, the details and colours still look wonderfully vibrant some 2,000 years later!
