By around 100 BC, major hillforts in Britain seem to have declined or been abandoned while smaller enclosure settlements seem to have proliferated.

The appearance of rectangular houses in the south marks a radical change from the ancient tradition of living in round structures…

Maiden Castle, located near Dorchester in Dorset, England, Maiden Castle is one of the largest Iron Age hillforts in Europe. It was first built around 600 BC.

One of the larger Iron Age hillforts in the #ScottishBorders : White Meldon, near Peebles & on the neighbouring hill, Black Meldon. It has never been fully excavated but four lines of defence are visible as well as the remains of at least 29 roundhouses. #hillfortswednesday
