Today, we celebrate the vibrant spirit that makes our Island home so special. Whether it's the breathtaking sunsets or the heartwarming community, there's a bit of Island magic in every corner. 🥂

Apuknajit, also known as the Mid-Winter Feast Day, is a time when the Mi'kmaq community comes together to offer a feast to Apuknajit, the spirit of winter. The tradition typically involves leaving out food as an offering to honour the winter spirit. 🌬

The rattle holds a special place in Mi'kmaq culture, echoing through our ceremonies and rituals with its distinct sound. 🎶

Crafted from turtle shell or birchbark, it symbolizes connection with nature. Each shake carries the rhythm of the earth, the heartbeat of our community.

Each quill on birchbark is more than just art; it's a delicate dance of tradition and history that echoes the heartbeat of Lennox Island. ❤️

In the hands of an expert basket maker, these ash splints become a beautiful basket in just a few hours! 🧡

These baskets can last indefinitely and be passed down for generations if stored in a moderate environment. Not too dry (not in an attic) and not too wet or humid.

The word for bear in Mi’kmaq is Muin. The bear represents courage.
Though the bear is gentle by nature, the ferociousness of a mother bear when one of her cubs is approached is the true definition of courage. She has the strength to overcome fears and danger to achieve her goals.

As we welcome Punamujuiku, or 'Frost Fish Run Time' or 'Tomcod Spawning, we celebrate another beautiful cycle in the Mi'kmaq lunar calendar. 🐟
The Atlantic tomcod holds cultural significance for #Mikmaq , especially in January when they are abundant in the water for spawning.
