Yesterday I had the pleasure of surveying an ancient meadow not ploughed since at least 1802. Fascinating medieval ridge-and-furrow w/ yellow-rattle, birdsfoot trefoil & lady's bedstraw on ridges & meadow foxtail in furrows. 17 species per m2 & 30 in 200 m2! #NationalMeadowDay

Today is #NationalMeadowDay , so here's a couple of photos of a beautiful meadow in Northumberland I visited with Millennium Seed Bank UK Team colleagues to collect seeds. A fab example of an upland hay meadow in Upper Coquetdale, with a nice population of wood cranesbill.
