Human amoral / OCTOPLOID

The genome assembly of Heliophila variabilis, a South African species (~334 Mb, 2n = 22), revealed four fractionated subgenomes, indicating an allo-octoploid origin. The ancestral octoploid genome likely formed through hybridization between distant intertribal allotetraploids.

Rediploidization of the ancestral octoploid genome was marked by extensive reorganization of parental subgenomes, genome downsizing, and more than 100 speciation events in the genus Heliophila.

Our existing projects range from understanding disease resistance and aroma pathways, applying multi-trait genomic prediction for fruit quality, phenomics/genomics-enabled decision-making, and deploying new genotyping tools for octoploid strawberry.
