Ancient polychromy study

Rood Screen at Morston, Norfolk, All Saints. The carvings in the spandrels are just as important as the saints painted below and retain their original polychromy.

And not only statues.

Greek and Roman temples were decorated with friezes — sculptures carved into walls — and rather than being left as pure stone, it seems they were covered with polychromy (bright, varied colours).

This model of the Temple of Zeus was made in 1886:

Such intricate and elaborate carvings - still with some of the polychromy clinging on 😍 Imagine it fully coloured!

This remarkable stone screen at St Cross in Winchester was recycled from nearby St Faith's church, which was demolished in 1507 😱

It still retains a little polychromy, and perhaps I'm being fanciful but do I see the ghostly outlines of saints in the niches?

This loculus relief is known as the ‘Beauty of Palmyra’.

Made of limestone and with traces of polychromy, this relief is thought to date the C3rd CE. There are both traces of red and yellow paint.
