Made around 2300 years ago, this striking terracotta bust remarkably retains a significant amount of its colour. In vibrant hues, fine decorative details remain including her tendrils of hair and jewellery.

And not only statues.

Greek and Roman temples were decorated with friezes — sculptures carved into walls — and rather than being left as pure stone, it seems they were covered with polychromy (bright, varied colours).

This remarkable stone screen at St Cross in Winchester was recycled from nearby St Faith's church, which was demolished in 1507 😱

It still retains a little polychromy, and perhaps I'm being fanciful but do I see the ghostly outlines of saints in the niches?
