Apart from fallow deer, the only species of concern here is an occasional Sitka Spruce. After a meeting my chainsaw, Sitka are left for recycling by the forest. I felled hundreds of this toxic dross before planting 20 years ago, only rotting stumps remain.

Less than 0.2% of the country is old growth woodland, mostly small fragments. Over 20 years, against all odds, my wood has managed to expand over the old boundary wall into an adjacent plantation. These fragments need to be given room to thrive.

Decay and renewal - that is what a is about in this season. A truly spectacular year for fungi AND a mast year, the oaks are laden down with acorns. Jays already screeching in anticipation

Hard to believe that the median size of an ancient woodland fragment in Ireland is only 3 Ha. This makes them vulnerable. Mine once formed part of the great sessile oak forest. The Woodland League
