Our Cascade was designed by and was inspired by Italian gardens. Construction began in 1738 but it never worked properly in Lord Burlington's time. In 1748 the hydraulics were pronounced a failure and it remained dry until its restoration in 1996-7.

died on this day in 1748. William Aikman's portrait of Kent was painted to celebrate his contribution to and hung in the Grand Hall there. It is now in the National Portrait Gallery collection.
