Our Cascade was designed by #WilliamKent and was inspired by Italian #Renaissance gardens. Construction began in 1738 but it never worked properly in Lord Burlington's time. In 1748 the hydraulics were pronounced a failure and it remained dry until its restoration in 1996-7.

#WilliamKent died on this day in 1748. William Aikman's portrait of Kent was painted to celebrate his contribution to #WansteadHouse and hung in the Grand Hall there. It is now in the National Portrait Gallery collection.
