The first peacock butterfly of the year has been spotted at the Observatory!🦋

Our Estates and Meteorological Officer, Shane, spotted the butterfly feeding on Cherry laurel blooms this afternoon. Cherry laurel blooms are full of early nectar for butterflies and bees. 🐝

It's National Space Day!🪐 🌌 🔭

National Space Day is a day where we can celebrate all things Space (sounds like every day to us)!

Today we will be working with over 370 school children and showing them the wonders of our universe in both our Planetarium and our Outreach dome!

Dreyer’s New General Catalogue-made in Armagh and used still, to teach astronomy and astrophysics across the world. Troughton’s Equatorial Telescope- installed in Armagh, hence modern navigation.

It’s a new month! 🗓️

Hopefully May will bring some better Spring weather so that we can explore the outdoors more, and what better place to start than with our ‘Cosmo Lost in Space’ trail?
You can get your booklet at our reception! Happy trails!🪐

Day 3 and the final day of my excellent astronomical trip to Ireland. Was able to visit the three historic observatories at Armagh. Also the house and grounds with its wonderful interpretation features (including a stone circle - of which more another time!)

Day 2 of my astronomical trip took me to Birr Castle in the midlands of Ireland, where I saw the Great Telescope (sometimes called the “Leviathan”). Dating from 1845, this was the world’s largest telescope for over 70 years! Much still remains intact.

Incredible few days looking at sites of astronomy in Ireland (for my usual followers, not megaliths!) This from my first day - the two historic observatories at Dunsink near Dublin.
