On Tuesday 19th March, IUCN WCEL Chair Christina Voigt presented IUCN’s written submission to the Registrar of the CIJ_ICJ regarding the Advisory Opinion requested by the UN General Assembly on Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change.

The #IUCN submitted its statement to ITLOS in the advisory proceedings on states obligations under UNCLOS on climate change.

It was drafted by the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law IUCN-WCEL (World Commission on Environmental Law), Ocean Law Specialist Group.

Today, the Paris Agreement Implementation and Compliance Committee (PAICC) has - for the first time - notified two Parties of the initiation of consideration of issues, regarding Art. 4(2) and Art. 9(5) Paris Agreement, respectively.

With this, PAICC has become operational.

Can we call March 29th the “International Climate Law Day” from now on? Legal processes in Strasbourg and New York today started waves that may be felt for many years and decades to come.

No surprises here! Voluntary standards never had the same robustness as REDD+ developed under the UNFCCC and included in the Paris Agreement.
