Went to see my #Dryptosaurus backdrop in person today at the New Jersey State Museum and it looks great! Thank you Dana Ehret, Ph.D. for coming out on his day off to say hello! 🦖 #paleoart #NewJersey #watercolor #dinosaur
New Creataceous background created by NJ native Christopher DiPiazza. Included are a 'fleshed out' version of Dryptosaurus, Cretaceous sea turtle Peritresius ornatus, Horseshoe crabs & Grebe-like birds modeled after fragmentary bird fossils of the same age from the Inversand quarry.
Dana Ehret, Ph.D. New Jersey State Museum Lastly of course I had to include #horseshoecrabs . They are here now. They were here hundreds of millions of years before the #Cretaceous . So they were likely present then too. They’re also familiar creature to anyone visiting the #museum who’s been to the #Jerseyshore .
Dana Ehret, Ph.D. New Jersey State Museum I also included #birds which I learned ARE on the fossil record from #NewJersey ! They are all known from very fragmentary remains so Dana Ehret, Ph.D. and I decided a generic #grebe type form would work best based on the little info we know.
In addition to #Dryptosaurus , this scene features a few other animals, like the #turtle , #Peritresius , described by Dana Ehret, Ph.D. and also on display at the New Jersey State Museum! 🐢
Thrilled to finally share the Cretaceous #NewJersey environment I painted in #watercolor for the New Jersey State Museum’s iconic #Dryptosaurus mounts! 🦖 #paleoart #NewJersey #museum #dinosaur Dana Ehret, Ph.D.
Another micro- #FossilFriday post! This teeny-tiny tooth belongs to extinct Mackerel shark Archaeolamna kopingensis. While this species is found in the Cretaceous (~75-65 million years ago) sediments of New Jersey, this specimen is actually from the Mesa Verde Group of Wyoming.
This week's micro- #FossilFriday features the left maxilla of the fossil lizard Prototeius stageri that was found and described from the Ellisdale locality, Campanian age (77-78 million years ago). This animal was a Teiid which includes examples such as whiptails and racerunners.
The Carcharodon hubbelli tooth was collected by avocational collector Morne Wium and donated to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. You can watch Morne find and prepare the specimen here: youtube.com/watch?v=R1nQPE…

We've got two post for this #FossilFriday ! Natural History Curator, Dr. Ehret, published a new paper on the first records of the extinct white sharks Carcharodon hubbelli and Carcharodon planus from the Miocene of New Zealand! Read the paper here:
