There has been a noticeable increase in number of open breakages along both Juba and Shabelle rivers occassioned by ElNino floods. Urgent action is needed to protect livelihoods.

The 2023 El Nino had a great impact on the humanitarian crisis in South and Central Somalia, causing displacement of people and increased vulnerability of communities in the affected areas. Happy to note that our work contributed greatly to saving lives and livelihoods.

Today FAO in Somalia #SWALIM team visited Xabaale site in #Somaliland , where #ILWRM EU Delegation Somalia funded project built up a reservoir. Water harvested on the only rainy day affecting this area is pumped with solar energy into the troughs/water point, serving the whole community.

FAO & institutions of the Federal Government of Somalia met today to agree on the transition process for transferring FSNAU & SWALIM functions to the govt. FAO assists with strengthening Somalia’s national institutions for economic development & resilience to future challenges.

The current gu’ rainy season is below average, marking the 4th consecutive failed season. Partners are transitioning from #drought response to #famine prevention, reorienting responses & targeting the most vulnerable people.
