Three concerts of mainly new music by JACK Quartet Wigmore Hall today. Many premieres, more importantly amazing playing throughout. Glorious day culminated in Liza Lim's String Creatures. So many sounds (winds, electronics, amplification) but just a quartet! Quite miraculous!

Crushing musical instruments isn’t my idea of incredible power, or of creativity. In fact, this advert is more than a little offensive, Tim Cook, and given how much of a struggle is faced by the music industry, more than a little tone deaf too.

Tonight Wigmore Hall Ian Bostridge saw me take a pic of him & Imogen Cooper after their excellent recital of Goethe songs by Wolf & Schubert. Before lovely Loewe encores, he happily explained this was permissible during applause, referencing his woeful recent experience CBSO

Recent concerts Wigmore Hall have been on a real roll. Especially in Brahms. Wonderful Brahms Piano Trios on Saturday (see previous posts); tonight his String Sextets by Belcea Quartet Jean-Guihen Queyras Tabea Zimmermann were, well, perfection (if such exists).

Tonight's Italian postwar avant-garde fest Barbican Centre by BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus et al was exhilarating & beautifully played throughout. Seen live second time, Berio's remarkable Sinfonia felt overlong, but rest of programme dazzled, especially Nicholas Daniel OBE 🇺🇦🏳️‍⚧️ in great Maderna Oboe Concerto #3

Has any journalist done more to undermine the reputation of BBC current affairs for impartial, authoritative reporting than Laura Kuenssberg? She’s a cross between a gossip columnist and party activist.

I'm really excited to be playing Brahms 1 next season with one of my favourite orchestras: CBSO I'm happy to be filmed on phones by the audience except for the following bars when I really need to concentrate and could be distracted:

The Rwanda bill makes me sick.

Desperately vulnerable people may now be forced into unnecessary, irrational and ridiculous trauma to placate a culture of racist paranoia that has evolved dramatically under this unconscionable regime.

It would be tempting to label this…
