Three concerts of mainly new music by JACK Quartet Wigmore Hall today. Many premieres, more importantly amazing playing throughout. Glorious day culminated in Liza Lim's String Creatures. So many sounds (winds, electronics, amplification) but just a quartet! Quite miraculous!

Recent concerts Wigmore Hall have been on a real roll. Especially in Brahms. Wonderful Brahms Piano Trios on Saturday (see previous posts); tonight his String Sextets by Belcea Quartet Jean-Guihen Queyras Tabea Zimmermann were, well, perfection (if such exists).

Tonight's Italian postwar avant-garde fest Barbican Centre by BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus et al was exhilarating & beautifully played throughout. Seen live second time, Berio's remarkable Sinfonia felt overlong, but rest of programme dazzled, especially Nicholas Daniel OBE 🇺🇦🏳️⚧️ in great Maderna Oboe Concerto #3

Two remarkable concerts on consecutive evenings Wigmore Hall - yesterday, lovely Beethoven & Schubert by Chiaroscuro Quartet & Christian Poltéra; tonight (& even better? it felt quite flawless!) the 3 Brahms piano trios by Igor Levit Julia Hagen & Renaud Capuçon - such a treat!
