NATO is central to our security and we don’t take it for granted.

Our defense and security cooperation with the US is becoming increasingly important. It’s concrete and creates benefits for both sides: Germany has ordered nearly $23 billion worth of weapons and equipment for the Bundeswehr. We have about 380 contracts with US defense companies.

Visiting Arlington National Cemetery with Defense Minister Pistorius yesterday, I learned that a miniature Brandenburg Gate found its place in the display room next to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. What a beautiful symbol.

Today we continued our celebration of the EU's 2004 enlargement. For a special lunch I hosted Ambassadors from the Member States and from countries now on the path to EU accession. Their governments are working hard to make the changes needed to join our family. And we need them.
