Drug trafficking is converging with organized crime & money laundering, while criminals are exploiting people on the move.

Heartened to hear the G7 Italy share our resolve to mobilize & step up responses.

I’m here in Venice to brief G7 Italy Justice Ministers on the escalating threat posed by drugs, organised crime and corruption.

UN Office on Drugs & Crime is committed to working with the G7 to address these global challenges.

Grateful for Italy’s leadership in advancing multilateral cooperation.

I was honoured to meet Ecuador Attorney General Diana Salazar M., an inspiring woman in the fight against crime and corruption.

We discussed the security situation in the country and I assured her of UN Office on Drugs & Crime’s steadfast support on the rule of law and anti-corruption.

Had a productive meeting with members of Ecuador’s cabinet, strengthening our joint resolve against organized crime, corruption & drug trafficking.

I emphasized UN Office on Drugs & Crime’s expertise & our collaborative approach to bolster rule of law institutions, guided by our engagement plan.

It gives me great pride to open UN Office on Drugs & Crime’s new Programme Office in Quito 🇪🇨 solidifying our commitment to Ecuador towards peace, justice & the rule of law.
 
Our expanded presence will enable tailored strategies, enhance regional cooperation & ensure greater impact on the ground.

We agreed on the need for regional cooperation and sharing of best practices to effectively tackle these threats.

The past 15 years have seen 750+ attacks on environmental journalists for reporting on crimes against our planet such as illegal mining, poaching & wildlife trafficking.

Over 26 million people work in forced labour, generating $236 billion in illegal profits a year.

This exploitation violates their dignity & human rights.

We must ensure fair & decent working conditions for all workers.

The Zakouma National Park in Chad is an important natural reserve home to 370+ endangered species that we must protect.

Great to see UN Office on Drugs & Crime trained 25 justice officials on how to collect & preserve crime scene evidence for use in court proceedings, vital to #EndWildlifeCrime .

Over the past decades, we've taken important steps in the fight against human trafficking & migrant smuggling.

But today, that progress is under threat.

UN Office on Drugs & Crime is launching a new global action to step up efforts against these crimes.
