Tiny 1st instar hoverfly larvae racing around in a Hoverfly Lagoon - these are most likely Helophilus pendulus and they are incredibly adept underwater movers using the water surface tension to move along underwater as if there’s a glass top!

Got an empty water butt? Turn it into a MEGA hoverfly lagoon. Many hoverflies and other flies breed in stagnant water and, in this dry weather, have nowhere to lay eggs. Simply add grass clippings and leaves to water. Sticks for egg-laying/climbing out. It STINKS of LIFE 🪰🍃
