Always keep in mind that climate dystopia has been and continues to be caused almost completely by the fossil fuel industry, which continues to lie and block any meaningful action. Through financial control of politicians and the media they've found this quite easy.

The UK's biggest humanitarian programme for Afghanistan has been reclassified as a climate aid project.

£150m from a project providing emergency food, shelter and healthcare now counts towards the UK's 'climate finance' goals.

Aashis Joshi 🍉🍉 Many academics/experts on reducing emissions have either stayed quiet about the profound nature of the mitigation challenge or, worse still, have massaged their assumptions to align with business-as-usual. Prestige, gongs & peerages will be awarded but integrity is the price.

I absolutely agree. I don't remember any climate scientist communicating the need for radical political action to tackle the root cause of climate breakdown--industrial colonial capitalism. They try to be 'apolitical', which is a political choice that has helped maintain BAU.

My summary of what Professor Kevin Anderson says Kevin Anderson, is 'that there are no radically unaltered furtures' (I'm not sure if he's used those exact words), but I think this is an accurate summary of what he's saying.

I can't say exactly what will happen when, as there are so many variables. However, what we can say, with absolute certainty, is that trying to carry on as we are, will have massive unintended consequences, and will actually produce the most radical and unpleasant change.

It's not a choice, it's not about a wish for change, it's not about some perceived future revolution. It simply means that the climate and ecological crisis, has wrought such massive changes to our planetary system, that the present system can't last.

Dr. Genevieve Guenther Glen Peters Jim Skea I think you're being far too polite about those models. They are to mitigation what Exxon was to climate science. Their tacit purpose is preservation of the status quo thro' mitigation denial (with many good modellers working diligently, but within deeply subjective boundaries).

Kevin Anderson Glen Peters Jim Skea Skea should know, more than anyone, that those mitigation models are only hypotheticals resting on assumptions that have literally no empirical foundation.

Useful thread from Glen Peters
Hard to reconcile with:
Jim Skea at COP28 claiming that 55% of current gas use & 40% of current oil in 2050 is compatible with a 50% chance ≤1.5°C.
Or ..
Chris Stark on the UK, claiming 50%≤1.5°C is basically just an energy tech issue.

Many senior folk also, in private, tell me 'we are fcuked'.
But then in public these folk talk up what they are doing as if it's a big part of the solution.
This splitting seems to me to be a defence mechanism against *engaging with reality in an authentic manner*.

Fair?

Marcus Stewart Michael Liebreich Patrick Hamilton brian treacy Damian Carrington Zeke Hausfather I agree there's little evidence of explicit deep levels of social change (in relation to climate change), but that, in significant part, is because not only have we not tried, but much of the so-called expert community has deliberately shut down any such 'troublesome' narratives.

Physicyclist Mike Thompson Chris Stark Just ramp up the CDR, shroud it in eloquent language, & a pseudo-tech BAU will still deliver 1.5°C.

We’re living in a professionalised land of cloud cuckoos, but one the physics doesn’t recognise; nor do those poor climate-vulnerable communities at the sharp end of our impacts.

Kevin Anderson Mike Thompson Chris Stark The CCC CB6 plots emissions in 5 year chunks to 2050. It looks to be about 6GtCO2 as you say. Would be double our proportional share as 1% of world population. But we're currently responsible for 2% of emissions so maybe CCC assume everyone reduces on same trajectory? Fair? No.
