Evan Gershkovich has now spent one year behind bars in Russia on charges that defy reason.
Journalism is NOT a crime.
Today, alongside the The Wall Street Journal, Committee to Protect Journalists and Evan’s colleagues, friends & family, we once again call for his immediate release. #FreeEvan #IStandWithEvan
Today’s ruling to prolong The Wall Street Journal Evan Gershkovich’s detention is painful, as this week marks 1 year since RU wrongfully detained him for doing his job. Evan’s case is not about evidence, due process, or rule of law. It is about using U.S. citizens as pawns for political ends.
Ambassador Tracy visited The Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich today at Lefortovo prison. Next week will mark 1 year since his wrongful detention by RU authorities. Evan remains strong and resilient, but it is a tragedy he awaits a trial for a crime he did not commit. #JournalismisNotaCrime
A profound moment with families of Americans unjustly held overseas & those who returned safely as we raised the Hostage & Wrongful Detainee flag Department of State for the first time. We stand committed to work for the safe return of all wrongfully detained U.S. citizens. #BringThemHome
Consular officers from Посольство США в РФ/ U.S. Embassy Russia visited wrongfully detained U.S. citizen Paul Whelan today at IK17. Paul deserves to go home, and we will continue to work to bring home all U.S. nationals wrongfully detained or held hostage abroad.

Embassy officials witnessed today’s Lefortovo Court ruling again prolonging the wrongful detention of U.S. citizen The Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. The grounds for Evan’s detention are baseless. Journalism is not a crime. We continue to call for Evan’s immediate release.

Embassy officials attended the hearing of wrongfully detained The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich today at Lefortovo Court. We are deeply concerned by the court’s decision to extend his pre-trial detention by another 2 months. We reiterate our call for his immediate release.
