Happy Pet Day!

In traditional Japanese culture, cats are sacred symbols of luck, balance and protection. The maneki-neko (beckoning cat) is an iconic figure that emerged during the Edo period (1603-1868), depicting a seated cat holding gold coin, with one paw raised.

The year 2024 is ruled by the dragon, in the context of the ancient Chinese zodiac. These animal symbols correspond to a year in a twelve-year cycle that follows Jupiter’s orbit around the sun.

This beautiful sushi set with chopstick rests is designed by Piu Bose, a multi-disciplinary artist who lives and works in Bath. They are decorated with koi fish swimming through the elegant swirl design.

We are hosting a free online talk: ‘A Worldwide Passion: Collecting Chinese Ceramics, Jades and Works of Art’ with Colin Sheaf, a renowned Chinese art specialist, on 23 November 2023.
