Why do we have Black Maternal Health Week?

The latest Texas DSHS stats don't lie: While TX had the lowest proportion of women receiving 1st trimester care nationally in 2020, it's much lower for Black TX women.

US: 76.1%
TX: 67.7%
Non-Hispanic Black women in TX: 60.1%

Those with an 'agenda' = women who want to listen to their doctors and not have medical decisions forced on them by partisan state supreme court justices--the way TX Justices Blacklock, Devine, and Bland (Jane Bland) ruled Kate Cox didn't qualify for a medical exception.

The reference to “buying a bus ticket” is intentional. It speaks to who they think gets abortions—poor women who make poor choices.

It’s ignorant and insulting.

We forget how re-traumatizing this experience can be for the women telling their stories—of how they lost a wanted pregnancy and how leaders needlessly put their lives at risk.

In awe of their continued courage they display only in the hope of helping other women.

Today's reminder:
- the fight for reproductive freedoms must include the state supreme courts
- Republicans can't be trusted to protect IVF & birth control

The Texas Supreme Court is also to blame.

TX had a 6-week abortion ban *before* Roe fell, and their Kate Cox ruling showed the country how to make medical exceptions meaningless.
