This gorgeous mineral is found only in the rocks of Castleton, Derbyshire. Blue John is a colour banded form of fluorspar, and has been mined since the mid-1700s. By the late 1700s, it was a popular choice for columns and vases in fine houses across the country!

Chalcopyrite is probably the most important and major source of copper, and the most abundant copper ore. This on is beautiful with brassy chalcopyrite crystals and fluorite cubes that look almost regal. It is likely to be from the Carn Brea area.

415 million years ago, this jasper cobble & masses of other debris got transported by a flash flood, eventually forming the conglomerates in Auchmithie. Therefore, this cobble has been around for significantly longer & is quite probably > 1 billion years old. Wild!

Stalactites of limonite, an iron ore mineraloid that is a mixture of minerals, from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This one probably has a lot of goethite in it.

A memorable afternoon on 20 Oct when I attended a ceremony at Worcester Guildhall to collect my British Empire Medal, awarded for 'services to mineralogy' in the King's Birthday Honours List. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.

Books of thin muscovite crystals on albite crystals. Mica is sometimes touted as an eco friendly alternative for plastic glitter, but is sometimes still covered in plastic, and child labour can be an issue in its mining.
