The power of the Southern Ocean! A storm crossing the Drake Passage, Antarctica! #SDAScience
Heading towards the Weddell Sea and saw icebergs for the first time!!! Lots of penguins and fur seals as well ๐ง๐ซถ๐ผ๐ฆญ #SDAScience
Fighting jet lag and mild land sickness after returning homeโฆ so Iโve put together a compilation of my video clips from the #SDAScience expedition involving animals from our trip to Antarctica!
We are currently in the Bransfield Strait ๐ฆ๐ถ in the search for Antarctic krill ๐ฆ. The whales found them before us but we are now mapping a big swarm using the onboard acoustics. Excited about the prospect of target fishing later on. #RRSSirDavidAttenborough #SDAScience
Spent the morning cleaning all the trace metal CTD bottles and had a test launch with the new robot arm, weโre finally ready to get some actual samples onboard! 1st Drakeโs Passage CTD @ 200m going into the water as we tweet! #SDAScience
Fantastic creatures, Antarctic krill. They can live for 5+ years, grow to 5+ cm and have one of the largest biomasses. #SDAScience #RRSSirDavidAttenborough
1st sea spiders of the trip & 1st time I've ever seen them alive. These 2 Nyphons (australe I think) came up in the multicorer. 2nd ๐ธ is under UV, highlighting their 'hairs'. One was carrying round a large brood.

A few #seaspider beauties from our test of the Agassiz trawl. A couple of Nymphon species and an Austropallene.
Phpotographing them under UV light to check for any biofluorescence.
Next trawl is 5.5km deep, really looking forward to seeing what we discover

Taking part in the Polar Science Trials has given me the opportunity to learn about so many areas of marine science I never thought Iโd get to try! Really grateful for the patience of the science teams onboard and for letting me get stuck in to all their cool work! #SDAScience
Tense moments as the multicorer hits the seabed and we watch the first sediment cores collected from #RRSSirDavidAttenborough from 2300m water depth somewhere near Elephant Island #SDAScience
Mixed emotions. Watching a pod of orcas including calves around the ship. But seeing the fierce side of nature as they hassle a humpback and calf #sdascience
After dealing with the roughest seas Iโve ever experienced in the Drake Passage, we are back in the Falklands! Iโm still processing so many of the amazing things weโve seen and achieved this trip #SDAScience
Last sunset before we cast off in the morning and start our journey down South. Very excited for the #Antarctic #SDAScience to come.
All done for Project RaCE:TraX on SD025, lots of seawater and mud to analyse thanks to all the support and enthusiastic help from amazing crew and scientists โค๏ธ
#SDAScience continues, on to moorings and Hesperides Deep!
